in terms of potential is generative AI already better than what “traditional artists” can do? if not how far off are we from that in your estimation?

Precisely, since the goal IS “anyone can illustrate this”, good quality is an added bonus, and the only “ trivial” problems are getting the people with things to say to realize that, and getting the target audience(s) to adjust their expectations for what “I have little artistic talent, but I do have passion to say something” LOOKS like visually.
This thread and/or site could contribute to both of those with some focused intent, but I have pushed “the ball” as far as I can think of how to do (at least for now), and I hope other people pick it up and run with it at least a bit further here.

so we all know of cases of artists getting caught using AI. Do you know of cases where someone presented their work as having been done with AI but it was actually done without AI? for context back during the days when CGI was new and exciting, scenes that were made with traditional special effects were sometimes marketed as having been done with CGI

I would say there is no need to make up for crappy production values with AI-generated images, since it’s trivial to make good looking, generic pictures, while it takes a bit more effort to create something even amateurish-looking with additional elements added manually. It would be more effort for (arguably) worse result.

99% of the time, my only comment would be “I like this.” - so I just hit the upvote/fav icon instead.
same here, pressing button is way easier than typing something creative in the comments so I leave comments only when I really feel it, like something is really cute or i laugh hard

prior to ai you would see a lot of poor photoshop/bad ms paint meme things that would make up for their crappy production values with wit and charm. there is very little of that with ai (at least on here) but why is that? it should be easier with the tools that let you doodle the composition no?

Like Felagund said a lot of posted images just doesn’t stand out in any way, and it obviously hard to find a words about something that ordinary. I think images with more creative, less usual situations or stories could get more attention and more comments.
Although it might not work for images that differs from other in negative way, like poorly generated or picturing things most people doesn’t like (extreme fetishes, etc).

A big part of art communities I’ve been in is based around sharing knowledge and critiquing. I’ve not been on tabtabus too much but 95% of the stuff that pops up in new is using a slightly modified default prompt and uploaded with little to no inpainting. There is no knowledge to learn from the people uploading that because they aren’t doing anything to make their gen different. Similarly critique is pointless since they don’t edit their gens anyway so why bother providing feedback. There are only a handful of people (truekry and siber you the real MVPs from what I’ve seen so far) that actually bother to put any effort into the things they are posting. I’m not sure there are enough competent AI users to get the ball rolling on the usual art community critique and share discussions.

I think it also comes down to the kind of people in the community. The ones who are active participants of the community tend to dislike AI, and prefer not to be in such spaces. while a lot of the AI side is made up of lurkers or people who weren’t that involved in the furry community to begin with, so they just keep not commenting like they always did.

Part of it is the idea that everything is now “content” - to be consumed, and then discarded or forgotten. There are too many people who don’t bother commenting on things, because the stuff they’re looking at is all interchangeable in their mind.
And frankly, genAI is making this worse, as the individual touch is lost unless the prompter is very particular about what and how they’re prompting.
There are some people on this site whose images I can immediately recognize, because of a consistent look/feel/theme, and an awful lot of people generating and posting Trixie butts (for example) that don’t stand out in any way from dozens of Trixie butts posted before.

Default search

If you do not specify a field to search over, the search engine will search for posts with a body that is similar to the query's word stems. For example, posts containing the words winged humanization, wings, and spread wings would all be found by a search for wing, but sewing would not be.
