Equestria’s first contact with alien life ended in disaster and war. But despite doubts and old pain, new friends were found. This was largely due to encounters with aliens whose goal was not to force all the planet’s inhabitants into indentured servitude.

Fluttershy was born in a time when xenophilic sentiment was on the rise, despite the fanatical militarism of the Solar Empire. But thanks to new alien friends, such sentiments were no longer overshadowed, allowing Fluttershy to grow up obsessed with alien life in all its forms. Even so, she joined the Army Science Corps and was sent on her first mission, where she befriended the fauna of the planet Horx 3. Even with her upbringing and the culture of her home, she remains an extremely kind and compassionate pony.
