Description

I would like to tell you
a story from long ago,
one that sometimes comes back to me
when I listen to my heart.
Once there stood a little railway post,
lost somewhere among the mountains,
and there lived a railway keeper
who was always waiting for the train.
Only one train passed each day,
and even that one never stopped.
Where are you going, train of mine?
Where have you gone, my dear?
Once again you’ve set off on your journey,
along the iron road, along the paths of smoke.
And he would wonder how wonderful it might be
if only, for a moment, it would stop,
and linger awhile beside his little railway post,
stopped by a simple signal flag.
Inspired by and translated from a Romanian song from 1961.
