I've ridden a few times in my life. I am far from an expert and it was always with an instructor. But you hold onto the reins. You steer the horse through it. This way the horse knows you are in charge. I also never said it is to hold her up. But those have a *bit*. (Celestia here doesn't). That is the metal rod that goes behind their teeth in their mouth. The saddle also lagcks stirrups, since Celestia would lower herself to let her off her back. To me this is the middle ground of them working together.
