Eclipse is the elder brother to Celestia and Luna, and original ruler of Equestria. He had full control over the cosmos, and was the most powerful Alicorn who ever lived. He was even responsible for the creation of the Thestral pony race, which he gave to Luna as a race of ponies for her to command all her own as a 100th birthday present. Eclipse loved his sisters and his country, however, he began to notice that ponies feared him. His gigantic height and immense cosmic power left most ponies trembling whenever he was near.

Not being wanted to be remembered as the King of Nightmares, which was a name that had begun to circle around the populous, Eclipse decided it would be best for him to leave Equestria to his two sisters, who were much more loved and respected than he. He took a dedicated portion of the Thestral population and left to create his own realm where he could live in relative peace. However, despite being separated by worlds, he still kept an eye on his sisters, and always kept them away from true disaster, subtly nudging events so as to limit the damage any one disaster might cause.
