I'd say your path is a good one to go down.
Regarding faces:
Maud Pie - stoic, faint blush: personality match 100%. Lidded stare adds intrigue.
Limestone Pie - downturned mouth, stronger blush, furrowed eyebrow: looks annoyed at herself for liking us seeing her. It's great.
Pinkie Pie - The weakest of them all. Relaxed open mouthed smile, relaxed featureless face, nearly invisible blush blank/dead stare.
Mind you, the less expressions a face shows, the more is left for the observer's interpretation. And pinkie has zero expressions apart from that smile, which feels empty to me because of that.
Maybe adding crinkles, furrows on the forehead or bulges under the eyes. ^_^
Not sure if you have that much fine control tho.
