Looks like the Pool had a transcription error... It seems a reasonable hypothesis that it can't give the spirits that live in it the power of Alicorns, so it had to settle for a Unicorn.

Not that this reduces the artistic quality of this piece! It is akin to when I would tell people whose wheel-thrown pottery bent over from imperfect technique: "Salvador Dali was a noted and respected artist!".
